Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are known for their healthy lifestyle. The health program for the church was first written in 1833 by President Joseph Smith, who gave it to the first saint, stressing that it was a revelation from God. Contemporary Latter-day Saints call these guidelines the „Word of Wisdom” (Doctrine and Covenants 89).

Some of the principles of this Health Code are:

Renouncing alcoholic beverages, smoking and chewing tobacco and drinking „hot drinks” – it is assumed that it is specifically about tea and coffee. „Healthy herbs” as well as fruits and cereals are especially recommended. Meat should be eaten „in moderation”. According to the Church’s doctrine, the violation of health rules is also the abuse of all kinds of medicines and drug use.

„Health rules over one hundred years are a perfect reflection of the recommendations now being made by the world’s scientific community to improve health and maintain good health,” says Dr. Ted Adams, program director at the LDS Hospital Fitness Institute in Salt Lake. City.

Mormons live longer

In 1997, 14 years of research completed at UCLA, during which data on the mortality and ways of taking care of the health of 10,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California were collected. They showed that among church members who followed health recommendations, the level of mortality from cancer and cardiovascular disease was one of the lowest in the United States – about half that in the general population. These studies also showed that the predicted life expectancy of Church members who followed the guidelines for a healthy lifestyle was 8 to 11 years more than for the general population in the United States.

Why do not Mormons drink coffee, tea or alcohol? What is the law of the Mormon Church about health and proper diet?

The official answer

Our body is a precious gift from God. To maintain our bodies and minds in health and strength, God gave Joseph Smith health in 1833. This law is known as the Word of Wisdom (see Doctrine and Covenants 89: 1-21).

In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper nutrition and physical and spiritual health, God spoke out against the use of the following products:

  • Tobacco.
  • Alcohol.
  • Coffee and tea.
  • Drugs.

God promises those who follow the Word of Wisdom, wonderful physical and spiritual blessings. Nowadays, scientists promote some of the principles that a loving God gave to Joseph Smith almost two centuries ago.
